Grumman Widgeon G-44
This is a preview of Sammy Smith's new scratch-built float plane. This scale model was hand crafted from a set of non-R/C plans over the past 14 months. It has a wingspan of 84", a fuse length of 60" and will weigh in at around 12.5 lbs. Covering is by silver Monokote. While the main gear is inoperable, the tail wheel is retractable and serves as the rudder for water taxi purposes. Power comes from two Magnum .91 4-stroke engines. Fuel is supplied by two tanks in each wing due to space limitations within the nacelles. It is awaiting two foam floats being cut by Billy Wiggins. This should bring a lot of people out to Lake Lanier next spring to see its maiden flight! Great craftsmanship, Sammy!!

Well, no, this isn't our home field, but it could be. And if it does snow, Tracy Tesmer has a set of skis for the occasion. He spent Christmas in Cleveland, Ohio, and took his Twist along for the ride. He wasn't going to let a little thing like ice and snow keep him from flying. He and his brother crafted the skis out of aluminum for the main gear. The tailwheel did not require a ski. The Portage Aero Modelers held their Frozen Finger Fun Fly on New Year's Day and invited Tracy to the festivities. They were an excellent host according to frozen fingered Tesmer.

Tracy said he had to land several times in order to free his servos and ailerons from accumulated ice and snow. As our spouses well know, there is only a fine line between being a dedicated R/C pilot and insanity.
